Eine „mehr-als-digitale Anthropologie“

In diesem Artikel entwickle ich eine Forschungsagenda für eine
„mehr-als-digitale Anthropologie“ und verbinde hierzu Ansätze aus der Tradition der Digitalen Anthropologie mit den theoretischen Grundlagen einer Relationalen Anthropologie. Dies ermöglicht, so mein Argument, anthropologische Forschungen zum „Digitalen“ gegenüber essentialisierenden Vorannahmen, was das Digitale und das Analoge als differente Sphären ausmacht, abzusichern. „Mehr-als“ signalisiert zugleich eine Verwandtschaft meiner spezifischen Theoretisierung des „Digitalen“ mit ähnlichen
aktuellen Ansätzen – wie beispielsweise einer mehr-als-menschlichen Anthropologie –, die sich einer binären Beschreibung und Aufteilung der Welt in Menschliches und
Nicht-Menschliches, Natur und Sozialität, Technik und Kultur, in virtuelle und physische Räume, grundlegend entziehen. In den Fokus kommen vielmehr die fortlaufenden Übergänge, Übersetzungen, aber auch Lücken und Störungen, auf die wir dann stoßen, wenn wir Praxis als zentrale analytische Einheit zum Ausgangspunkt unserer Forschung machen. Im zweiten Teil des Artikels werde ich diesen Ansatz anhand ethnografischer Untersuchungen von Bürgerbeteiligung und öffentlicher Verwaltung in der Stadt Frankfurt am Main verdeutlichen. Wie ich zeige, verlagert der Ansatz einer mehr-als-digitalen Anthropologie
die Aufmerksamkeit auf die weitergefassten Kontexte sogenannter smarter städtischer Verwaltung und Online-Bürgerbeteiligung und insbesondere auf die Arbeit, die mit nur partiell verbundenen Infrastrukturen und den vielfältigen Netzwerken einer mehr-als-digitalen Politik des Bürgerengagements einhergehen. Ein Ausblick in zukünftige Forschungslinien einer mehr-als-digitalen Anthropologie schließt den Artikel ab.

The mobility of blind people with long canes is currently increasingly reorganised by elements such as smartphones, voice output, apps or headphones and in this respect represents a digital media practice that requires learning, practice and a knowledge-based coordination of simultaneous practices, bodily techniques and heterogeneous things. This paper explores this form of mobility and elaborates its distributed sensory character.
Locomotion flanked by long canes, smartphones and headphones is described with Pickering (1995) as a tuning process that is situated and practically produced and proves to be constitutive for the production of urban space in terms of urban practices.

Der schmale Grat zwischen Realismus und Interpretation

This article questions and accounts for the collective management of “the relation to reality” among the amateurs – that is, the interpretative community of authors and readers – of so-called “realistic” Franco-Belgian Comics. My analysis aims at asking to what extent and in what ways this collective management, with its conventions and provisional agreements but also its tensions and controversies, can recursively inform ethnographic methods and theories as to their own collective management of “the relation to reality”. To do so, I examine how the narrative conventions of realistic Franco-Belgian Comics are rhetorically maintained through a tension between two dimensions, which are constantly negotiated among the amateurs of comics: a strong expectation that both the drawings and the storyline faithfully represent “reality” in giving a meticulous and meticulously documented account of “it” on one side, and an acceptance of the interpretative dimension inherent in creative and artistic representations on the other. Questioning the tradition of ethnographic realism in the recursive light of this analysis, I argue in conclusion that this tension pertains to an ontological misunderstanding, and plead for an articulation of ontological multiplicity, i.e., multiple relations to multiple realities, and for granting both fictional beings of comics and ethnographic beings their own modes of existence.

Locked in Liminality

Against the backdrop of proclamations of a society of fear, risk and panic from the late 1970s to the present, the article takes a lead from fears as productive agents within the ethnographic process. Through the focal lens of pandemic everyday experience, and deploying essayistic ways of thinking and writing, it draws attention to the intersubjective and intercorporeal practice of meaning-making as conceptualised in phenomenology, psychoanalysis and pragmatist semiotics, and outlines its relevance for emergent interpretation and reflexivity. On an interactive micro-level, the essay explores the moment of ‘in-between’ that is sparked by surprise or crisis, and opens a transient ‘third milieu’ where experience can be shared, whilst cultural meaning is in ongoing renegotiation. The idea of this ambivalent space, as marked by indeterminate creative possibilities merging with fear and uncertainty, is followed further through Corona communication and narration, and investigated in its ambiguous effects of consolidating agency, and perpetuating anxiety and ideological exclusion by way of paranoid ‘infection’. The article inquires into the dynamic conceptual potentials of liminality theory, which it transgresses towards a late-capitalist state of permanent exception: What happens when everyday actors find themselves overpowered by paradoxical emotional requirements that cannot be resolved into new sociality? How can ethnographers, with view to their own involvement into the meshes of everyday fears, retain an empathic, yet empirically grounded understanding of pandemic experience and beyond?

Kultur als rurbane Ressource

The article examines how “culture in rural areas” is conceptualized by cultural policy and cultural actors and which potentials of valorization are attributed to it. In doing so, I highlight the tensions that become evident in talking about arts and culture in rural areas and how these affect funding policies and self-perceptions of cultural actors. The effect of a distinction-oriented cultural dispositive is elaborated and its interaction with structures of cultural policy is presented. Finally I reflect on the effect of scholarly contributions in an application-oriented way to the debate on the value of arts and culture with a plea for a broad concept of culture.
